{"id":214373,"date":"2023-02-03T18:31:43","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T17:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/?p=214373"},"modified":"2024-12-17T18:34:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T16:34:21","slug":"canar-archaeological-and-cultural-capital-of-ecuador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/canar-archaeological-and-cultural-capital-of-ecuador\/","title":{"rendered":"Ca\u00f1ar, archaeological and cultural capital of Ecuador"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A year ago, Ca\u00f1ar was declared the archaeological and cultural capital of <a href=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/ecuador-galapagos\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ecuador<\/a>, in this article discover some of the reasons why this township has become one of the most important tourist destinations in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Ca\u00f1ar is located 281 km south of Quito and 36 km north of <em>Azogues<\/em>, in <em>the province of Ca\u00f1ar<\/em>. On January 26, 2001, it was declared the archaeological and cultural capital of Ecuador, as it is the cradle of the <em>Great Ca\u00f1ari Nation<\/em>, a culture that appeared in these territories around 2,000 years before Christ (Narr\u00edo era) and that has left a great legacy in terms of art and ceramic traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who visit Ca\u00f1ar have before them a wide range of tourist possibilities, as in addition to its important archaeological and cultural resources, this canton is surrounded by magnificent natural sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some of the attractions that should not be missed during your stay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<strong>Archaeological complex of Ingapirca<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" src=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ingapirca-001-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ingapirca-001-red.jpg 400w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ingapirca-001-red-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is considered the largest and best preserved archaeological site in Ecuador. Its name, derived from the Quechua language, means &#8220;wall or wall of the Inca&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the tourist jewel of the canton and the province. There are the remains of an elliptical ceremonial temple, old warehouses, houses and other structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the vicinity of the complex you can also see interesting rock formations such as &#8220;La Cara del Inca&#8221; (the face of the Inca). On the other hand, a museum on the site exhibits beautiful archaeological pieces of pottery, bone and metal corresponding to the <em>Ca\u00f1ari<\/em> and <em>Inca<\/em> cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/laguna-de-culebrillas-canar-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/laguna-de-culebrillas-canar-red.jpg 400w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/laguna-de-culebrillas-canar-red-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Culebrillas Lagoon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This lagoon is considered a sacred place, because according to legend, <em>the serpent creator<\/em> of the <em>Ca\u00f1ari nation<\/em> hid in its waters after a great universal deluge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lagoon is located at an altitude of 3860 metres and is surrounded by <em>paramo<\/em>, the typical Andean vegetation. In the surrounding area there are important archaeological remains such as <em>Labrashcarumi<\/em> (an ancient stone workshop) and Paredones (a tambo that sheltered travellers who passed through the region for hundreds of years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Qhapaq \u00d1an<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/captura-de-pantalla-2023-01-26-a-las-095820-1024x768-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/captura-de-pantalla-2023-01-26-a-las-095820-1024x768-red.jpg 400w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/captura-de-pantalla-2023-01-26-a-las-095820-1024x768-red-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Known in Spanish as &#8220;El Gran Camino del Inca&#8221;, it is the ancient Andean road system, formed on the basis of a network of routes, strategically arranged to cover the entire length of the Andean geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, the <em>Qhapaq \u00d1an<\/em> was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The best preserved section of the <em>Qhapaq \u00d1an<\/em> in Ecuador runs through the Sangay National Park, in the upper zone of the <em>Culebrillas<\/em> <em>Lagoon<\/em>. Along the way, it is possible to discover archaeological remains as well as the typical flora and fauna of the moors and mountain forests of the <em>province of Ca\u00f1ar<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Guantug Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/tejedor-museo-guantug-canar-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/tejedor-museo-guantug-canar-red.jpg 400w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/tejedor-museo-guantug-canar-red-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is located in the<em> Guantug leisure park<\/em>. Its archaeological room exhibits bowls, ar\u00edbalos, axes, flutes, amulets and other ceramic, bone, shell and gold objects from the <em>Ca\u00f1ari and Inca cultures<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ethnographic room recreates scenes of daily life, celebrations and clothing of the most representative communities of the canton, whose colour and history fascinate visitors to the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ca\u00f1ari ethnic group<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/captura-de-pantalla-2023-01-26-a-las-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/captura-de-pantalla-2023-01-26-a-las-red.jpg 400w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/captura-de-pantalla-2023-01-26-a-las-red-300x241.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This ethnic group, which is descended from the former settlers of the <em>Ca\u00f1ar<\/em> and <em>Azuay<\/em> region, has a population of approximately 150,000 people. Although they used to speak &#8220;Ca\u00f1ari&#8221;, they now speak Quechua and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their way of life is based on livestock and agriculture and, to a lesser extent, on artisanal production. They are known for their courage and their attachment to ancestral traditions and customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ca\u00f1ari ethnic group has undoubtedly been a key factor in the declaration of Ca\u00f1ar as the archaeological and cultural capital of Ecuador, as its members have preserved their historical memory, customs and traditions, which are reflected in their clothing, music, legends, gastronomy and festivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>San Antonio Sanctuary<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/san-antonio-canar-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/san-antonio-canar-red.jpg 400w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/san-antonio-canar-red-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This sanctuary, which dates back to 1934, is located in the beautiful viewpoint of San Antonio, at an altitude of 3260 metres.
