A fountain stands in the middle of the square, bordered by eight small gardens arranged like petals and planted with roses.

Designated a national monument in 1985, the square is also where residents like to gather. People sit on the colourful chairs outside cafés to chat over a tinto, the traditional Colombian black coffee, particularly at the end of the day when the terraces become livelier.

The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception stands on the square, an imposing neo-Gothic church whose construction began in 1918. It was built with stones extracted from a nearby quarry and cut by hand. According to local tradition, worshippers helped carry them as an act of penance.

Jardín is easy to explore on foot. A short walk away from the square reveals small shops, workshops and old houses with flower-filled patios.

Coffee and local specialities

Coffee growing plays an important role in this mountainous region. Several coffee fincas, located a few kilometres from the centre, offer visits to discover the producers’ work, from harvesting the coffee cherries to tasting the final product. It is an opportunity to walk through the plantations and learn more about one of Colombia’s major agricultural traditions.

Jardín also has a few culinary surprises. Local artisans produce more than twenty varieties of arequipe, the Colombian version of dulce de leche, including mango and soursop flavours. Visitors can also find sweets made with panela, traditional cane sugar, as well as confectionery made from rose petals and even basil jam.

Another popular speciality in the region is locally farmed trout, generally served with patacones, slices of green plantain that are flattened and fried.

Our article: Panela: a natural product made in Colombia

La Garrucha, a cable car unlike any other

Among Jardín’s curiosities, La Garrucha is worth a detour. This small handmade cable car was originally built to transport residents, coffee, bananas and goods between the village and farms located on the other side of a ravine.

The small wooden cabin, suspended from cables, still makes the crossing today. The few-minute ride can feel like an Indiana Jones adventure, with views over the village rooftops and surrounding mountains. At the other end, visitors can enjoy the higher ground or continue along the country paths.

Orchids, birds and hiking

Two places are particularly worth visiting to discover the local flora and fauna. Mi Jardín Encantado, a private garden near the centre, is home to orchids and bromeliads, and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

A few minutes away, the Jardín de Rocas reserve offers the chance to observe local birdlife, including Andean cocks-of-the-rock, easily recognised by their bright orange-red plumage and large crest.

The surroundings of Jardín also offer several hiking options. The Camino de la Herrera leads into the countryside and to Cascada del Amor, while Cascada La Escalera can be reached on a shorter walk. Experienced hikers can take on the Siete Cascadas circuit, a seven- to eight-hour hike, with a shorter option of around five hours passing through Caída del Dragón, Cueva de los Guácharos and Salto del Ángel.

Another popular excursion is Cueva del Esplendor, a cave where a waterfall plunges through a natural opening in the ceiling. The more demanding routes follow paths that can be steep and slippery. It is advisable to undertake them with a local guide.

A getaway worth extending from Medellín

Around three to four hours by road from Medellín, Jardín is an attractive stop for discovering southwestern Antioquia. While the centre can easily be explored in a day, a stay of two or three nights allows more time to enjoy the surrounding area.

The village is particularly lively at weekends, when Colombians come to spend a few days there. During the week, the streets generally become quieter again and the terraces welcome those who take the time to stop.

A morning can be spent hiking in the mountains before returning in the late afternoon to the atmosphere of Plaza El Libertador over a coffee. It is a pleasant way to experience Jardín without trying to see everything in just a few hours.

Photos: FONTUR | Alcaldía de Jardín | D.R. | Jardín de Rocas

Experience the charm of Jardín, a picturesque Colombian village.
