{"id":217665,"date":"2023-10-10T18:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T16:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/?p=217665"},"modified":"2024-12-17T16:08:20","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T14:08:20","slug":"gastronomic-tourism-a-bridge-between-agriculture-gastronomy-and-sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/gastronomic-tourism-a-bridge-between-agriculture-gastronomy-and-sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Gastronomic tourism: a bridge between agriculture, gastronomy and sustainable development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) recently highlighted the growing importance of gastronomic tourism in promoting responsible agricultural practices, protecting biodiversity and reducing the environmental footprint.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the <strong>8th edition of its World Forum on Gastronomic Tourism<\/strong>, organised in collaboration with the <strong>Basque Culinary Center<\/strong> (BCC) from 5 to 7 October in San Sebastian, Spain, the <strong>UNWTO highlighted the close links between local produce, gastronomy and tourism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zurab Pololikashvili<\/strong>, Secretary-General of the UNWTO, emphasised that <strong>gastronomic tourism offers new opportunities for communities<\/strong>, enabling them to preserve their heritage and traditions while stimulating the growth and diversification of destinations. In addition, <strong>Joxe Mari Aizega<\/strong>, Managing Director of the Basque Culinary Center, stressed <strong>the importance of technology as a growth driver<\/strong> and the need to maintain the authenticity and diversity of the gastronomic offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Forum also highlighted <strong>the role of gastronomic tourism in preserving local territories and promoting sustainable practices<\/strong>. Expert discussions addressed issues such as the protection of culinary traditions, the value of geographical indications and the promotion of sustainability in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chefs Fatmata Binta, Mart\u00edn Berasategi and Pedro Subijana<\/strong> were <strong>appointed UNWTO Ambassadors for Responsible Tourism<\/strong>, underlining the importance of gastronomy in sustainable tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-217660\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/test.visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/05-gastronomy-and-tourism-red.jpg\" alt=\"(Cr\u00e9dit : OMT)\" class=\"wp-image-217660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/05-gastronomy-and-tourism-red.jpg 400w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/05-gastronomy-and-tourism-red-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Credit: UNWTO)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Another highlight of the Forum was the Gastronomic Tourism Start-up Competition, where <strong>innovative companies presented solutions to promote exceptional culinary experiences<\/strong> while addressing issues such as reducing food waste in tourism, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/sustainable-development\/food-waste-reduction-in-tourism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the publication of a global roadmap on this issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the UNWTO announced that the 2024 World Forum on Gastronomic Tourism will be held for the first time in the Middle East, in Manama, Bahrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:14px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Latin America<\/strong>, with its diverse culinary traditions, has <strong>become a must-see destination for food lovers the world over<\/strong>.
