{"id":234137,"date":"2025-05-19T21:52:55","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T19:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/unesco-recognises-two-new-geoparks-in-ecuador\/"},"modified":"2025-05-19T21:53:35","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T19:53:35","slug":"unesco-recognises-two-new-geoparks-in-ecuador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/unesco-recognises-two-new-geoparks-in-ecuador\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO recognises two new geoparks in Ecuador"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Once again, <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/ecuador\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ecuador<\/a>&#8216;s rich geological diversity has been highlighted by the addition of two new natural paradises to the list of Global Geoparks. With these additions, <em>the Land of Four Worlds<\/em> will now have <strong>three <\/strong>designated territories, a <strong>South American record in terms of its 256,000 km\u00b2<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/iggp\/geoparks\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The UNESCO Global Geopark <\/a><\/strong>designation, created in 2015, aims to protect areas of outstanding geological heritage that are internationally recognised. To obtain the label, each site must present <strong>a management plan integrating conservation, education and local development<\/strong>, ensure the active participation of communities and cooperate with the global network to share best practice. <\/p>\n\n<p>To date, there are 229 geoparks in 50 countries, including <strong>Chile<\/strong>, <strong>Peru<\/strong>, <strong>Mexico<\/strong>, <strong>Uruguay<\/strong>, <strong>Brazil <\/strong>and <strong>Ecuador<\/strong>. In Ecuador, <strong>Imbabura <\/strong>was the first area to be recognised, and now <strong>Napo Sumaco<\/strong> and the <strong>Tungurahua volcano<\/strong> have also been added. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:59px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/geoparque.imbabura.gob.ec\/index.php\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Imbabura<\/mark><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Between mountains and hills, the province of Imbabura, in the north of the country, combines geology, culture and biodiversity. It is home to the <strong>Imbabura volcano<\/strong> (4,630 m) and emblematic lakes such as <strong>Cuicocha <\/strong>(crater 3 km in diameter) and <strong>Yahuarcocha<\/strong>. Its majestic <strong>Sumaco volcano (3,732m) <\/strong>offers exceptional panoramic views over a 1,300km<strong>\u00b2<\/strong> geopark. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Napo Sumaco<\/strong> stretches across territories of extraordinary biological richness, home to endemic species and preserved primary forests that have stood the test of time. Its volcanic activity, which has intensified in recent decades, has created a spectacular landscape of deep canyons and solidified lava flows. <\/p>\n\n<p>The gateway to the volcano is the town of <strong>Ba\u00f1os de Agua Santa<\/strong>, where you can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities, including cycling, rafting and relaxing in the hot springs.
