For ten days, the capital of the Antioquia department celebrates its most iconic event: the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feriadeflores.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Feria de las Flores<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>. More than a festival, it\u2019s an ode to nature, rural culture, and a tradition recognized as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Colombia<\/mark><\/a>\u2019s <strong>Intangible Cultural Heritage<\/strong>: that of the <strong>silleteros<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With more than <strong>60 years of history<\/strong>, this event attracts thousands of visitors and showcases the floral wealth of a region that provides <strong>40% of national production<\/strong>, helping make Colombia <strong>the world\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>second-largest<\/strong><strong> flower exporter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Roots to Glory: The Story of the Silleteros<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Long before Medell\u00edn adorned itself with flowers, the <em>silletas <\/em>had a much more practical purpose. In <strong>pre-Hispanic times<\/strong>, the inhabitants of the Andes used these wooden chairs, carried on their backs, to transport loads across steep and muddy mountain paths where neither mules nor carts could pass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, they became an essential tool for farmers to take their most precious treasures to market: flowers. In 1957, 50 growers paraded through the streets with their creations for the first time. Since then, every August, <strong>Medell\u00edn <\/strong>pays tribute to these men and women who keep alive a tradition that has become a symbol of identity.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:64px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Festival with a Thousand Faces<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Feria-12-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-235436\" style=\"width:260px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Feria-12-red.jpg 700w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Feria-12-red-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>From the very first days, the city becomes an open-air stage with <strong>more than 110 public events <\/strong><strong>and 200 activities<\/strong>. On the program: concerts, the dance festival <em>Viva la Salsa<\/em>, and the <em>Orqu\u00eddea de Oro Trova Festival<\/em>, a beloved event where artists improvise songs in a playful, poetic duel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the celebration goes far beyond that: <em>La Feria a Ritmo de Bicicleta<\/em>, <em>the International Storytelling Festival<\/em>, <em>the Chivas and Flowers Parade<\/em>, <em>the Tusa y Despecho Festival<\/em>, <em>the Orchid, Flower, and Handicraft Exhibition<\/em>, and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:64px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Silleteros Parade: The Main Event<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Feria-16-red.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-235439\" style=\"width:292px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Feria-16-red.jpg 700w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Feria-16-red-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>On <em>Avenida Regional<\/em>, <strong>more than 530 participants<\/strong>, dressed in white, wearing traditional <em>aguade\u00f1o <\/em>hats, <em>the ruana<\/em> (a wool poncho), and the <em>carriel <\/em>(a typical leather satchel), march proudly with <em>silletas <\/em>on their backs\u2014handcrafted masterpieces that can weigh up to 90 kg and measure two meters in diameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To preserve this tradition, one essential rule applies: participants must belong to a <em>silletero <\/em>family and live in the horticultural zone of <em>Santa Elena<\/em> or its surroundings.<br>To honor their craft, the fair hosts a competition that awards winners by age category and design type: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Silleta Tradicional<\/strong> : Simple, colorful arrangements true to the tradition\u2019s origins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silleta Emblem\u00e1tica<\/strong> : Creations conveying civic, educational, or religious messages, often featuring portraits or national symbols.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silleta Art\u00edstica<\/strong> : Abstract designs celebrated for originality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silleta Comercial<\/strong> : Promotional for brands or businesses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silleta Monumental<\/strong> : The largest and most elaborate, including at least four flower varieties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A panel of expert judges evaluates each creation based on technique, freshness, quantity, shape, design, and variety.
