As the second-largest tropical forest in the Americas after the Amazon, it spans over 5.7 million hectares across <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Mexico<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/guatemala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Guatemala<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/belize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Belize<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>. It was in <strong>Calakmul<\/strong>, Mexico, that the three countries sealed an unprecedented agreement on August 15: the creation of the <strong>Biocultural Corridor of the Great Maya Forest<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Joint Effort for a Unique Territory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/La-Reserva-de-la-Biosfera-Calakmul_alfie.matus_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-236479\" style=\"width:238px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/La-Reserva-de-la-Biosfera-Calakmul_alfie.matus_.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/La-Reserva-de-la-Biosfera-Calakmul_alfie.matus_-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/La-Reserva-de-la-Biosfera-Calakmul_alfie.matus_-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This memorandum of understanding outlines cooperation in fire prevention, combating illegal logging, and sustainable management of forest products. The goal is clear: to protect <strong>an exceptional biodiversity<\/strong> that includes around 7,000 species, 200 of which are endangered and 50 considered priorities\u2014among them the jaguar, scarlet macaw, and tapir. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pact also includes <strong>a community-focused component<\/strong>: ensuring that the use of resources\u2014wood, fibers, fruits\u2014directly benefits local residents. To give symbolic momentum to this alliance, the signatories established <strong>August 15 as the Day of the Great Maya Forest<\/strong> and created <strong>a Conservation Merit Award<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shared Natural and Cultural Heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the governments involved, the Great Maya Forest is much more than a biodiversity refuge\u2014it is a territory of memory and identity. As <strong>John Antonio Brice\u00f1o, Prime Minister of Belize, emphasized<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c <em>We are not only protecting an ecosystem, we are also honoring the legacy of the civilization that thrived on these lands. The ambition is to create a model where <strong>conservation<\/strong> and <strong>the inclusion of today\u2019s Maya communities<\/strong> go hand in hand with economic development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A New Horizon for the Region<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond numbers and agreements, this pact embodies a rare determination: three countries choosing to transcend borders to protect a shared treasure.
