They weren\u2019t just used in rituals\u2014many communities also attributed healing properties to them. In Mesoamerica, certain varieties were used in infusions to treat respiratory or digestive ailments; in the Andes, orchid-based poultices were applied to wounds or muscle pain. Vanilla, derived from a Mesoamerican orchid, served both as a flavoring and a natural stimulant.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the arrival of Europeans during the colonial era, the wonder inspired by this floral abundance crossed the Atlantic. Travelers and naturalists documented their richness and exoticism, sparking fascination, studies, and collections in Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Richness and Diversity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Latin America remains the global heart of this botanical family. <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Colombia<\/mark> <\/strong><\/a>leads the way with 4,270 recorded species, thanks to its variety of ecosystems and elevations. <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/ecuador\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Ecuador<\/mark> <\/strong><\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/peru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Peru<\/mark> <\/strong><\/a>also stand out, with thousands of varieties thriving in their jungles and mountains. <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Brazil<\/mark> <\/strong><\/a>concentrates much of its orchid wealth in the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon. <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Mexico<\/mark> <\/strong><\/a>contributes its emblematic species, <strong>Vanilla planifolia<\/strong>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/costa-rica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Costa Rica<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> showcases the power of endemism with many unique varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where Science Meets Symbolism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of these flowers goes beyond science. Several countries have made them national emblems, recognizing their cultural and natural value. Colombia declared <strong>Cattleya trianae<\/strong> its national flower in 1936. In Costa Rica, the <strong>Lankester Botanical Garden<\/strong> in <strong>Cartago <\/strong>offers guided tours led by specialists who explain orchid reproduction, sustainable cultivation, and the protection of endemic species.
