Officially recognized as a national sport and listed as intangible cultural heritage, it has its roots in the traditions of the Muisca people, long before the arrival of the Spanish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From the Muiscas to Turmequ\u00e9<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally called <em>turmequ\u00e9<\/em>, this game was played by the <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/bachue-the-goddess-of-fertility-mythology-of-the-muisca-indigenous-civilization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Muiscas<\/strong><\/a>, a pre-Columbian civilization that flourished for over 1,500 years on the Colombian Altiplano in the present-day departments of <strong>Boyac\u00e1 <\/strong>and <strong>Cundinamarca<\/strong>. With the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, gold was replaced by stone, then metal. In the center, a metal ring (<em>boc\u00edn<\/em>) holds small packets of gunpowder (<em>mechas<\/em>). The goal is to hit the ring or trigger an explosion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fields vary between 8 meters (mini-tejo, for beginners) and 19.5 meters (official version). The game is played in teams of three or four people, with participants taking turns throwing from one side, then retrieving the discs to start again in the other direction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The score is based on four main actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>mano<\/em> (1 point, closest disc),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>mecha <\/em>(3 points, explosion),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>boc\u00edn <\/em>(6 points, disc in the ring),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>mo\u00f1ona <\/em>(9 points, disc in the ring with explosion).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The game ends at 21 points for mini-tejo, or 27 in the traditional version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DN9SOPQkSbY\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; More than 200 participants and 16 diplomatic delegations took part, from Japan to Canada to India, which won the final against Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For its part, the International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aitejo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tejo Association<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>is working to promote the sport outside Colombia. It is developing referee training programs, harmonizing rules, and organizing competitions such as the <em>Tejo World Tour<\/em>, with the aim of making it a recognized sport beyond Colombia&#8217;s borders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tejo remains a moment of conviviality and sharing, where each throw brings together centuries of history and tradition.
