In Latin America, painting and sculpture have often served to express a reality shaped by powerful landscapes, complex histories, and diverse cultures. Over the course of the 20th century, several artists transformed this perspective into a visual language capable of telling the story of the continent itself.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across their paintings and sculptures, they also offer another way to travel across Latin America: by following the cities, landscapes, and cultures that nourished their inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing a Brazilian Modernity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"881\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Abaporu-881x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-242086\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.8603664879571097;width:237px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Abaporu-881x1024.jpg 881w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Abaporu-258x300.jpg 258w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Abaporu-768x893.jpg 768w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Abaporu-1321x1536.jpg 1321w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Abaporu.jpg 1720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 881px) 100vw, 881px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A major figure of Brazilian modernism, <strong>Tarsila do Amaral (1886\u20131973) <\/strong>helped redefine painting in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Brazil<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> in the 20th century. Partly trained in Paris, where she encountered the European avant-gardes, she nevertheless chose to return to the colors, landscapes, and imaginaries of her own country to develop a distinctive artistic language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her most famous painting, <strong>Abaporu<\/strong>, became the emblem of the Anthropophagic movement, which proposed to \u201cdevour\u201d foreign cultural influences in order to transform them into a deeply Brazilian artistic expression. After training in Europe and interacting with artists such as Pablo Picasso, he returned to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/cuba\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Cuba<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> in the early 1940s. This return marked a turning point: his works began to incorporate symbols, mythologies, and imagery linked to Afro-Cuban cultures.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His most famous painting, <strong>The Jungle<\/strong>, blends human silhouettes, vegetal forms, and hybrid figures in a dense composition that evokes both tropical vegetation and Caribbean spiritual traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work is now part of the collection of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Museum of Modern Art<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> <strong>(MoMA)<\/strong> in New York. A central figure of Mexican muralism, he transformed the walls of public buildings into vast visual narratives where popular figures, historical episodes, and political references intersect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His murals recount <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Mexico<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>\u2019s social history while asserting a vision of art meant to engage with society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most famous episodes of his career occurred in 1933, when he created a mural for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellercenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Rockefeller Center in New York<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>.
