Presented by President Luis Abinader, the <strong>Ruta del Encuentro<\/strong> aims to create a new cultural itinerary connecting the country\u2019s north to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/5-reasons-to-fall-in-love-with-santo-domingo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Santo Domingo<\/a><\/strong>. Stretching <strong>450 kilometers<\/strong>, this tourist corridor is based on sites linked to the earliest European presence in the Caribbean, with the goal of turning this heritage into an organized and accessible travel experience.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Driven by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academiadominicanahistoria.org.do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Dominican Academy of History<\/mark><\/a>, local authorities, the Spanish government, and private stakeholders, the project seeks to meet international standards while highlighting areas still largely outside mainstream tourist circuits.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A historic itinerary across the territory<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mapa-encuentro.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-242758\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7504558478770513;width:362px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mapa-encuentro.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mapa-encuentro-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mapa-encuentro-768x439.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Officially named the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rutadelencuentro.gob.do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Ruta del Encuentro de Dos Civilizaciones<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>, the project largely retraces the first European movements on the island in the late 15th century.<\/p>\n\n<p>The route is organized into <strong>three main sections<\/strong> and includes <strong>over 60 historical sites<\/strong> identified by specialists:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Section A (La Isabela \u2013 J\u00e1nico):<\/strong> starting point in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/puerto-plata-between-port-city-landscapes-and-stories-from-the-dominican-north\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Puerto Plata<\/a><\/strong>, considered the first European settlement in the Americas. The itinerary crosses northern landscapes, passing through archaeological remains, restored churches, and interpretive trails. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Section B (J\u00e1nico \u2013 Cotu\u00ed)<\/strong>: traverses the central Cibao region, combining colonial fortifications, rural roads, and small towns developing lodging and culinary experiences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Section C (Cotu\u00ed \u2013 Santo Domingo): <\/strong>arrival in the capital, linking urban heritage, archaeological sites, and religious buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>The itinerary is designed as a progressive journey, with daily stages of <strong>20 to 30 kilometers<\/strong>, in a format inspired by the Camino de Santiago.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Targeted interventions to structure the experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/la-isabela-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-242755\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4991634132738427;width:277px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/la-isabela-3.jpg 850w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/la-isabela-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/la-isabela-3-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The project goes beyond merely creating a route. It includes concrete interventions at several key sites. <\/p>\n\n<p>In La Isabela, restoration work has been carried out on the church, museum, and archaeological zones, making it a true entry point for the itinerary. The route development also includes interpretive trails, basic visitor infrastructure, and the enhancement of existing remains. <\/p>\n\n<p>Initially, priority is given to<strong> Section A (La Isabela \u2013 J\u00e1nico)<\/strong>, with other segments to be developed gradually, aiming eventually for the itinerary to be <strong>recognized as a World Heritage site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A response to tourism diversification<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>This initiative is part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/dominican-republic-towards-a-national-ecotourism-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">broader strategy by the Dominican Republic to broaden its image beyond beach tourism<\/mark><\/a>. In <strong>2025<\/strong>, the country welcomed <strong>11.6 million visitors<\/strong>, a record level, up <strong>4.3%<\/strong> from the previous year. <\/p>\n\n<p>In this context, the Ruta del Encuentro targets specific segments \u2014cultural, religious, and nature tourism\u2014 combining hiking, historical interpretation, and interaction with local communities.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A new way of reading the territory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Beyond tourism, the Ruta del Encuentro offers a new interpretation of heritage.
