{"id":242857,"date":"2026-03-26T16:06:53","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T14:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/?p=242857"},"modified":"2026-03-26T16:06:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T14:06:54","slug":"tonina-reopens-a-major-maya-site-in-chiapas-accessible-once-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/tonina-reopens-a-major-maya-site-in-chiapas-accessible-once-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Tonin\u00e1 reopens: a major Maya site in Chiapas accessible once again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After more than two years of closure, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lugares.inah.gob.mx\/es\/node\/4359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">the archaeological site of Tonin\u00e1<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>, in southeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/p\/mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Mexico<\/mark><\/a>, has reopened to the public as of March 21. <strong>Coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Anthropology and History<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inah.gob.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">INAH<\/mark><\/a>), this reopening once again highlights one of the most distinctive Maya complexes in the state of <strong>Chiapas<\/strong>, away from the country\u2019s most visited circuits.<\/p>\n\n<p>Located near <strong>Ocosingo<\/strong>, the city is reclaiming its place in the region\u2019s cultural offering at a time when travelers are increasingly drawn to lesser-known sites that complement Mexico\u2019s major archaeological destinations.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A site restored and reorganized for visitors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The reopening of Tonin\u00e1 comes with significant restoration and development work. Interventions focused on cleaning and consolidating the structures, as well as rehabilitating access points. <\/p>\n\n<p>Several key areas were involved, including the <strong>ball court<\/strong>, the <strong>Temple of War<\/strong>, and the main platforms of the <strong>Acropolis<\/strong>. Partially sunken and located facing the Acropolis, it reflects the representation of the underworld in Maya cosmology. Research has also revealed hydraulic systems designed to flood this space, as well as serpent-head sculptures associated with symbolic and astronomical functions.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A strategic reopening at the time of the equinox<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The reopening date was not chosen at random. It coincides with the spring equinox, a period that attracts large numbers of visitors to archaeological sites across the country every year. In 2026, more than 179,000 visitors were recorded on this occasion, with a strong concentration at emblematic sites such as <strong>Teotihuac\u00e1n <\/strong>and <strong>Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In this context, Tonin\u00e1 enhances the offer in southern Mexico at a time of high demand, providing an alternative in a region where natural and cultural heritage converge.<\/p>\n\n<p>Located near <strong>Palenque<\/strong>, the site can also be integrated into itineraries structured around the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/maya-train-an-extended-route-linking-mexico-belize-and-guatemala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tren Maya<\/a><\/strong>, which serves this part of the territory and connects several major archaeological zones in southeastern Mexico.<\/p>\n\n<p>Accessible from <strong>Tuxtla Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>, <strong>San Crist\u00f3bal de las Casas<\/strong>, or <strong>Palenque<\/strong>, Tonin\u00e1 can now be more easily included in regional travel routes.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A new perspective on Chiapas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Beyond the reopening of a site, Tonin\u00e1 is part of a broader dynamic aimed at diversifying cultural itineraries in southern Mexico.
