Stages appear in the streets, movement is reorganized, and the entire city lives to the beat of the <a href=\"https:\/\/festivalvallenato.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<p>Here, <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-latin-america.com\/en\/rhythms-of-colombia-the-vallenato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>vallenato<\/strong><\/a> is not limited to a series of concerts. It is part of a way of telling the territory\u2019s story, connecting generations, and circulating narratives. During these few days, this repertoire\u2014passed down orally and from accordion to accordion\u2014is performed everywhere, challenged, and reaffirmed.  <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A project born long before the stage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Before it had a name or a fixed date on the calendar, the idea of bringing accordion players together already existed. The <strong>department of Cesar<\/strong> was created in 1967 and sought to affirm its identity. The following year, in 1968, Valledupar hosted the first official edition of the festival in Alfonso L\u00f3pez Square. <\/p>\n\n<p>The project was led by <strong>Consuelo Ara\u00fajo Noguera<\/strong>, <strong>Alfonso L\u00f3pez Michelsen<\/strong>, and <strong>Rafael Escalona<\/strong>, whose songs were already widely known.<\/p>\n\n<p>The festival date was not chosen at random; it is linked to the celebration of the Virgen del Rosario, the city\u2019s patron saint. Participants perform the four traditional vallenato rhythms: <strong>paseo<\/strong>, <strong>merengue<\/strong>, <strong>son<\/strong>, and <strong>puya<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>Every ten years, the <strong>Rey de Reyes category <\/strong>brings together former winners, placing musicians face to face who have each, in their own way, shaped the history of the festival.<\/p>\n\n<p>Alongside this central contest, other formats complete the program: <strong>the unreleased vallenato song<\/strong> highlights composition, while the <strong>piqueria <\/strong>is based on improvisation, in direct lyrical duels between singers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Over time, children\u2019s, youth, and amateur categories have been added, opening access to new performers in a world long marked by family lineages.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the evenings, large concerts featuring national and international artists attract a broader audience and give the festival a different, more open dimension.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DJK2H7fOh5h\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF;
