The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Claudia Cornejo, revealed on 11th March that the government has decided to lift the mandatory 14-day quarantine for travellers arriving in Peru on international flights, as well as suspending the requirement of a negative Covid-19 molecular test (PCR) for travel between the country’s provinces by air.

The Mincetur spokesperson said that both of these points were approved during the last Council of Ministers. The announcement was welcomed by the private tourism sector.

Claudia Cornejo said that in the case of international flights, passengers must present a negative Covid-19 molecular test (PCR) to enter the country. In addition, on arrival an antigen test will be carried out on passengers at Lima’s Jorge Chávez airport. Essential biosecurity measures will also be maintained to prevent the spread of the virus, as set out in the sectoral health protocol, which requires the permanent use of masks and face protection inside the airport facilities and on the plane.

He said the new government measures were approved after observing a slight improvement, especially in the metropolis of Lima, in the number of cases of infection and mortality, among other indicators of the Covid-19 pandemic, recorded during the last two weeks of the health emergency.

“In the case of the quarantine that was required for travellers coming from abroad, it will be suspended and we will return to what we had in December, that is, that people coming from abroad only need their PCR test to enter our country (…) on domestic flights, this PCR test will be suspended and we will return to what we had previously”, added the Minister, after noting that these two measures will contribute to the revival of the Peruvian tourism sector.
