Very present in the collective imagination, Peru is the seat of the Inca Empire and ancient civilizations, as evidenced today by emblematic sites such as Machu Picchu, the Kuélap fortress and the Nasca lines. The geography of Peru can be divided into 3 large areas, each with treasures to reveal. This plurality of tourist offers makes it an essential destination in South America.

Kuelap Fortress

Located at an altitude of almost 3,000m, Kuélap is an archaeological site that covers 460 hectares, where the Andean people of the Chachapoyas lived (between 1200 and 1470 AD), called by the Incas Chacha Puyu, which means “people of the clouds”. The fortress dating from the 10th century was discovered by Juan Crisostomo Nieto in 1834. It is characterized in particular by linear walls 20 meters high with only three entrances that gradually get smaller to allow only one person to enter the fortress at a time.

Inside, there are no fewer than 420 circular buildings spread over two levels, the Pueblo Alto and the Pueblo Bajo.

The site, which is accessed from the village of Nuevo Tingo, is open every day from 8am to 4pm. The cable cars allow visitors to ascend 4 kilometres in 20 minutes, to an altitude of up to 3,000 metres.

Mochica culture

The Mochica culture was born at the foot of the Andes mountain range, on the northern coast of Peru. It is found in an inhospitable territory, in the heart of one of the driest deserts on the planet, and yet it was the cradle of three great pre-Columbian civilizations a thousand years before the emergence of the Inca Empire: Moche (100 BC and 800 AD), Sicán (600-1400 AD) and Chimú (1100 and 1470 AD).

The discovered tombs testify to the belief in a life that transcended earthly existence towards which the deceased were to move.

The Mochica Route includes the main archaeological attractions such as the site of Chan Chan, the most imposing terracotta city in pre-Hispanic America, the archaeological site of El Brujo, the temples of the Sun and the Moon, as well as the Royal Tombs of the Lord of Sipán.

The Route also includes numerous natural, cultural and scenic sites in the coastal regions of Lambayeque and La Libertad, on a route that combines the richness of pre-Columbian civilizations with the best of the contemporary world.

LATAM airlines serves Kuélap with the flight

Lima-Jaen

New hotel in the Amazonas region

Since September 30, 2016, LATAM Airlines has been operating a direct daily flight between Lima and Jaén in northern Peru.

This new service implies a diversification of the Peruvian tourist offer by allowing a direct connection with the northern regions, which contain treasures such as the citadel of Kuélap, the Gocta Falls, the sarcophagi of Karajia and the incredible fauna and flora of the Amazonas region.

On February 15, the Casa Hacienda hotel reopened in the village of Achamaqui. It is located 30 minutes from the city of Chachapoyas. The hotel has 31 rooms, a meeting room, an outdoor swimming pool and vegetable gardens. It is located near the main tourist attractions of the region such as the Kuélap citadel, the Gocta Falls and the Leymebamba Museum. The hotel is designed like a colonial estate that opens onto the banks of the Utcubamba River.

ADVENTURE TOURISM IN PERU

The citadel of Choquequirao

Choquequirao, which means “Cradle of Gold” in Quechua, is an ancient Inca citadel located in the Vilcabamba mountain range in the department of Cusco in the south of the country.

It is located near the Salcantay mountain at 3,033 meters above sea level and overlooks the Rio Apurimac valley.

In recent years, the site, which is part of the Salcantay Archaeological Park, has acquired tourist and cultural importance with its impressive terraces, platforms, ceremonial centers, temples, canals connected by wide staircases and its extensive network of paths.

Vinicunca, the majestic multi-colored mountain in Peru

Three hours drive south of Cusco, there is a mountain range, Vilcanota, which hides one of the most beautiful landscapes in Peru: Vinicunca, the rainbow mountain. Vinicunca is located in the Province of Quispicanchi, region of Cusco and culminates at almost 5,000 m. above sea level. Its colors are all natural, created by a large number of sedimentary rocks in erosion. What makes it beautiful and impressive is the way its stones are transposed to give this multi-colored appearance. Open to trekking enthusiasts, a hike of an average difficulty level of 4 hours awaits those who wish to discover this natural wonder. The return is easier and takes about 2 hours.
