Peru – Feast of the Candelaria

The Candelaria Festival in Puno is one of the most significant celebrations in Peru. Although it’s not a carnival in the traditional sense, its colorful parades, dances, and music make it a truly unique event. For over a week, the city comes alive with folkloric music and vibrant processions honoring the Virgen de la Candelaria, the city’s patron saint, who has a deep connection with Pachamama —Mother Earth—, symbolizing both fertility and purity. This shared connection between the two beliefs unites them during the festival. Visitors are given the chance to experience a blend of religious devotion and indigenous culture, all within an atmosphere full of energy and tradition. In fact, in 2014, UNESCO declared the Candelaria Festival an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
