The Magdalena River, one of Colombia’s greatest natural and cultural treasures, is about to embark on a new chapter in its history. From March 2025, the river will be the backdrop for a unique river tourism experience. This project promises not only a top-of-the-range journey, but also an authentic immersion in the beauty of this mythical river, a journey where nature, history and local communities intertwine to create a unique experience.
AmaWaterways, one of the world’s leading river cruise operators, has developed this new initiative with two luxury vessels built in Cartagena de Indias: the Amamagdalena and the AmaMelodia.
The Amamagdalena will set sail on 15 March and will be the first cruise ship to operate on the waters of the Magdalena River, with a capacity of 60 passengers. The ship will offer guests gourmet restaurants, spacious suites and wellness areas. In addition to its facilities, it has been designed with sustainability in mind, to minimise its impact on the environment and allow travellers to enjoy the natural beauty of the region in a responsible manner.
The second ship, the AmaMelodia, will begin operations on 4 June 2025. With a capacity of 64 passengers, it is designed to maximise immersion in the river’s landscapes.

These cruises will also offer the possibility of extending the trip beyond the Magdalena, with extensions to Medellín before boarding and/or a three-day visit to Panama after the cruise.
A journey through time and space
Travellers can choose between two one-week itineraries:

The ‘Wonder of Colombia’, which includes destinations such as Cartagena de Indias, Gambote (Palenque), Calamar, Santa Bárbara de Pinto, Mompox, El Banco, Magangué, Nueva Venecia and Barranquilla.
The ‘Magic of Colombia’ route begins in Barranquilla and includes stops in : Nueva Venecia, Santa Bárbara de Pinto, Mompox, El Banco, Magangué, Calamar and Cartagena de Indias.
Every day of these cruises will be a new opportunity to explore. With some of the region’s most emblematic destinations, such as Cartagena de Indias, the gateway to the Colombian Caribbean, where travellers can stroll through the lively Getsemaní district, and Barranquilla, where they can discover its famous carnival, travellers will enjoy a complete experience that will immerse them in the region’s culture and history.
