Cruises: The Dominican Republic charts its course toward Caribbean leadership

Share

Since the beginning of 2025, the Dominican Republic has welcomed more than 1.6 million cruise passengers, and all signs point to continued growth. The recently signed agreement with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) places the country among the five destinations with which the association maintains ties at the highest presidential level, thereby strengthening its influence in the region.

Concrete benefits

This partnership opens the door to strategic meetings with the leaders of major shipping companies, where itineraries, service standards, local recruitment, and sourcing from national suppliers are defined. It also includes technical visits, operational adjustments, and training programs from the Center for Cruise Excellence (AQUILA) to improve shore services. The Dominican Republic will also host the Pamac Cruise Summit 2026.

Diverse ports, multiple experiences

The cooperation aims to integrate more regions into the circuit through tailor-made tourism products, better connectivity, and local training, thereby extending the benefits beyond the major terminals already in operation. Puerto Plata, via Taino Bay and Amber Cove, combines beaches, cultural excursions, and rum and cocoa tours. Further south, Cabo Rojo in Pedernales offers access to unspoiled coastline with nature reserves, whale watching, and community experiences. La Romana, with Casa de Campo, combines golf, marinas, shopping, and getaways to Altos de Chavón or Saona Island. Finally, Santo Domingo adds an urban touch with its historical heritage, museums, and gastronomy.

Infrastructure projects to expand the offering

At the same time, developments are underway in Manzanillo, Barahona, Samaná, and Arroyo Barril to diversify entry points and add new destinations to the Caribbean cruise map.

A regional economic driver

The cruise sector generates immediate revenue for the entire tourism industry, with a significant impact in areas outside the major tourist centers. The FCCA estimates that the Caribbean captures more than a third of global traffic, confirming its strategic role.

More than just a diplomatic success, this alliance marks a transformative step: the Dominican Republic intends to move from being a simple stopover to a destination of choice.
