Gastronomy

Grilled meats and Chilean empanadas flavored with raisins. Many dishes based on fish and seafood such as the famous "calillo de congrio" (conger eel in court-bouillon). A very sophisticated and delicious cocktail, the "Chilean Pisco sour", has become the national aperitif. The wine of course, whose quality is recognized worldwide, among the most famous brands we can mention "Cousino Macul", "Santa Helena" or "Concha y Toro", the cellars of the vineyards can be visited especially in the Maipo Valley.

Crafts

Chilean handicrafts are known for their alpaca wool textiles, lapis lazuli jewelry, and carved wooden objects. Craft markets, such as the one in Pomaire, offer a variety of authentic souvenirs.

Credit cards

To withdraw money, Visa or Mastercard ATMs are available but not as numerous as in Europe. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and bars.

Climate

The topography of the country, this "long corridor" backed by the Andes, determines an enormous variety of climates. The best period for the Atacama Desert is from April to November; for Patagonia, from November to March. It is cold in the Atacama Desert from June to September, mountain climate. For Patagonia even during the good period, the temperature oscillates between 10 and 15°. For Easter Island, tropical climate.

Electricity

The electrical current is 220 volts with European type sockets (round plugs). However, some sockets may require an adapter.

Chile is located in the time zone GMT-4 (standard time) and GMT-3 (summer time). The time change is applied, which can change the difference with Europe.

Internet

Internet coverage is excellent in cities and tourist areas, with Wi-Fi often free in hotels, cafes and restaurants. In remote areas like Patagonia, connectivity can be limited.

Money & Change

The official currency is the Chilean peso (CLP). ATMs are common, but it is advisable to have change for small transactions. Exchange offices often offer better rates than banks.

Clothes

Very warm clothing is required for trips between June and September. Comfortable shoes with “raised” soles. Important: heating is not as common as in Europe, so you should bring appropriate nightwear.

Taxis

Use official taxis or book through apps like Uber or Cabify. Taxis don’t always have meters, so agree on a fare before getting in.

Health

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Chile's major cities, but bottled water is recommended in rural areas. Bring mosquito repellent if visiting wetlands and consult a doctor for any necessary vaccinations. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Security

Chile is considered one of the safest countries in South America, but be careful with your personal belongings, especially in big cities like Santiago and Valparaíso. Avoid isolated neighborhoods at night and don’t display valuables.
