Argentina and Chile are working together to develop the Ruta del Fuego (Route of Fire), a cross-border tourism initiative aimed at making Tierra del Fuego a world-class tourist destination. This bi-national route aims to improve accessibility, stimulate economic growth and enhance the region’s appeal to visitors from all over the world.
Mariano Ignacio Plencovic, Argentina’s Under-Secretary for Motor Transport, announced the creation of the 1,800-kilometre route, which will take travellers on a nine-day, eight-night journey across Tierra del Fuego, passing through the main border crossings from San Sebastián to Bellavista.

The project, which began two years ago, is the result of a coordinated effort between the Chilean consulate in Río Grande, the local chamber of commerce and the provincial government, with the support of the Fuegian Tourism Institute. The initiative aims to boost tourism by improving infrastructure, simplifying administrative procedures, particularly for border crossings for operators and visitors, and benefiting the local commercial, hotel and gastronomic sectors.
More than just a tourism project, this important step towards regional integration aims to promote sustainable development while offering travellers a unique experience, combining history, culture and breathtaking landscapes.
Tierra del Fuego: Nature in its purest form

Remote and enigmatic, Tierra del Fuego offers a unique experience. Its vast steppes, dense forests and rugged, windswept coastlines bear witness not only to the heritage of its indigenous peoples, but also to the arrival of explorers who braved this remote corner of the world.

Today, the region attracts adventure-seeking travellers who come to enjoy water sports in the Beagle Channel or encounter wildlife on Martillo Island. Along the Ruta del Fuego, visitors can immerse themselves in the region’s typical architecture, savour the local cuisine and discover traditional crafts, revealing the hidden histories of this southern land.
More than just a scenic route, the Ruta del Fuego represents a commitment to cooperation between the two countries. This initiative highlights the richness of shared cultures and the reinvention of remote territories which, despite their isolation, possess their own identity, ready to be shared with the world.
