Stopover in Bogotá: When a Layover Becomes the Best Part of the Journey

Share

What if a short layover turned into the beginning of a love story with a city? That’s exactly what Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, is betting on with its brand-new program “Stopover, Amor a primera pista”, developed in partnership with Avianca. It’s an original, smart, and free, way to turn a simple airport connection into an express immersion into Colombian culture.

One Layover, a Thousand Possibilities

Every year, millions of transit passengers pass through Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport, the busiest in South America. Until now, most barely glimpsed the city before boarding their next flight. But now, Avianca passengers with up to 24 hours between two flights can turn that waiting time into a real urban escape. When booking their ticket, they can opt to transform their stopover into a free, guided city experience.

This is a first at such a scale for a South American city, and a brilliant way to position Bogotá as both a cultural and emotional gateway to Latin America.

Five Faces of the Capital to Explore

The program, available through stopover.visitbogota.co, offers five themed tours designed to showcase the city in just a few hours. Visitors can wander the colonial streets of La Candelaria, trace the colorful murals of local street art, savor Andean flavors in cafés and markets, discover the upscale districts in the north, or take in sweeping city views from the heights of Monserrate.

A Heartfelt Welcome and a Strategic Tourism Move

Behind the romantic tone of “Amor a primera pista”, the objective is clear: to captivate. Captivate travelers in transit, entice them to return, or better yet, extend their stay. According to Bogotá’s tourism authorities, the program could generate up to 40 million dollars in additional tourism revenue by 2026.

Bogotá is making its intentions known: to strengthen its position as a strategic air hub, ride the momentum of Avianca’s transatlantic growth, and secure its place on the mental map of travelers worldwide.
