According to a recent joint report by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) and Amadeus, international tourism has experienced an impressive recovery, particularly in the Americas. The report, entitled “Travel Insights 2024: Focus on the Americas,” highlights significant growth in tourism, with optimistic forecasts for the coming seasons.

In 2023, the number of international tourists reached approximately 1.286 billion, representing an increase of 34% compared to 2022. This increase shows that tourism has recovered 88% of its pre-pandemic levels, with recovery rates varying by region: Europe at 94%, Africa at 96% and America at 90%. Notably, the Middle East has surpassed its pre-pandemic levels, with growth of 22%.

In the Americas, travel demand remains strong for summer 2024, with the North American sub-region dominating in terms of search volume, accounting for 69% of the total. The US, UK and Brazil are among the top source markets for the region.

Travel to Central America shows an interesting trend, with Costa Rica leading the way in terms of searches, closely followed by Panama and Guatemala. Increased air capacity and strong bookings to destinations such as San José and Liberia indicate a growing interest in this region.

For South America, Buenos Aires, São Paulo and Santiago are the most searched cities, signalling a renewed interest in Argentina and Brazil as tourist destinations. The data also show a growth in searches for travel from China and Japan, underlining a broadening of the tourism market.
