Starting July 1, 2025, nearly all international travelers will be required to obtain an electronic visa (e-Visa) to enter Cuba. This new requirement will fully replace the traditional tourist card, which has served as the main entry document for tourists over the past several decades. The goal is to implement a more modern, secure, and efficient immigration system, aligned with international standards.
How to Get Your e-Visa: Steps, Processing Time, and Recommendations
The new document can be obtained from any consulate, authorized travel agency, or directly online via the official website. The cost is $50 USD, and the estimated processing time is up to 72 business hours after submission. The e-Visa allows for a stay of up to 90 days, with a one-time extension available for the same period. It can be requested up to 30 days before departure, is valid only for tourism purposes, and requires that the applicant’s passport be valid for at least six months beyond the planned departure date from Cuba.
Exemptions and Special Cases: Who Is Not Subject to the New Rule?
The new electronic visa system does not apply to Cuban citizens with a valid passport, who can enter the country without completing this procedure.
Canadian travelers are also exempt from this requirement, provided they travel directly from Canada, as the visa cost is already included in the ticket price. However, if they make a stopover in another country, they must apply for the e-Visa themselves. This exception is explained by the importance of the Canadian market to Cuban tourism: in January 2025 alone, more than 88,000 Canadian visitors arrived in Cuba, according to official data.
The measure also applies to children of Cuban citizens born abroad who do not hold a Cuban passport. Even if they have family ties or regularly visit the country, they must comply with this new immigration requirement.
