Wellness Tourism in Latin America: Thermal Waters, Rituals, and New Sensory Journeys

Share

Not all travel stems from a desire for adventure or discovery. Some journeys respond to deeper needs: slowing down, reconnecting with oneself, calming the mind, caring for the body, or simply reestablishing a more intimate bond with nature. Wellness tourism is no longer a passing trend—it has become one of the most dynamic and transformative segments of the travel industry. And Latin America, with its rich landscapes and traditional knowledge, is increasingly taking center stage.

This type of tourism, focused on physical, mental, and emotional well-being through experiences such as thermal springs, yoga, healthy eating, or ancestral rituals, generated over 814 billion dollars in 2022, according to the Global Wellness Institute. Annual growth of more than 12% is expected through 2030.

It’s no surprise, then, that the offerings are diversifying and more destinations are embracing this path. Some regions seem almost tailor-made to become natural sanctuaries for regeneration.

Thermal Waters and Traditional Knowledge

For centuries, Indigenous civilizations in Latin America have known the benefits of thermal treatments, much like the practices observed in ancient Europe. In the Andes—a quintessential volcanic region—waters that spring from the depths of the earth offer both physical and spiritual renewal.

In Ecuador, particularly around the Cuenca region, underground baths, volcanic mud, and massages are paired with local products like Andean fruits, featured in juices and health-conscious menus.

Further south in Chile, the springs of Coñaripe, Liquiñe, and Geométricas offer immersion in volcanic thermal waters deep within the primary forest, alongside meditation sessions, breathwork, and cooking with native ingredients. Cajón del Maipo, near Santiago, adds high-altitude hikes and yoga with views of snow-capped peaks.

Emerging Sensory Experiences

In other regions, wellness tourism is exploring new paths through sensory experiences that connect the body to local resources. This is the case with Argentina’s wine spas—a trend born in the Mendoza region, where grapes are not only for drinking but also for applying to the body.

Several establishments have developed vinotherapy treatments that harness the grape’s natural antioxidants. Scrubs and facials with grape seeds, baths with must extracts, massages with wine-based oils… These rituals take place in the heart of the vineyards, in a setting conducive to relaxation, where the pace slows, the air is purer, and every gesture invites a reconnection with the senses.

In a world where everything is accelerating, Latin America invites us to slow down, breathe differently, and feel more deeply. Here, wellness tourism is not just a trend or a luxury—it is rooted in the landscapes, local knowledge, and natural rhythms.
