Baños de Agua Santa: Ecuador’s Hidden Charm

Baños de Agua Santa, commonly known as Baños, is a picturesque town located at the foot of the Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador’s Andean region. Known for its thermal springs, lush landscapes and adventurous activities, Baños is a must-see destination for travellers looking for thrills and relaxation.

 

Between volcano and nature

Baños is nestled between several rivers, including the famous Rio Pastaza, and the slopes of the Tungurahua volcano, which rises to an altitude of 5,023 metres. The town enjoys a pleasant tropical climate, with an average temperature of 19°C, making it an ideal place to explore the surrounding countryside. The proximity of the volcano adds a touch of excitement and mystery, especially when occasional eruptions light up the night sky.

 

Hot springs and relaxing baths

The thermal springs of Baños are one of the city’s main attractions. The Termas de la Virgen are the most popular, with pools of hot water fed by the bowels of the volcano. The sulphurous waters are renowned for their healing properties, attracting visitors in search of relaxation and pampering. Termas El Salado and Balneario de Santa Clara also offer unique thermal experiences, ideal for relaxing after a day of adventure.

 

Cascade of Natural Beauty

Baños is surrounded by spectacular waterfalls. The most famous, the Pailón del Diablo, is an impressive 80-metre waterfall, accessible via a spectacular path. Visitors can also admire the Cascada el Manto de la Novia, as well as many other waterfalls along the road leading to the Amazon rainforest.

 

Adventure activities

For adventure lovers, Baños offers a variety of exciting activities. Rafting on the Rio Pastaza, canyoning in the surrounding gorges, canopy tours over the valleys, and bungee jumping from bridges are just some of the experiences not to be missed. Hikes around the Tungurahua volcano offer breathtaking panoramic views and opportunities to discover the local flora and fauna.

 

 

The Miradors

Baños de Agua Santa is famous for its miradors, which offer breathtaking views of the town, the Tungurahua volcano and the region’s breathtaking scenery.

Among the most popular, the Mirador Piedra Plancha offers panoramic views over the town of Baños, while the Mirador El Chonta is ideal for observing the Tungurahua volcano and its slopes. The Mirador Jabonillo, also known as the Mirador Tierra Negra, overlooks the Rio Pastaza and the surrounding mountains, providing an excellent place to relax and admire the view. Finally, one of the trendiest, La Casa del Arbol, offers the World’s End Swing: a unique experience at an altitude of 2,660 metres!  These viewpoints are perfect starting points for hikes, allowing you to take in the full richness of the Ecuadorian landscape.
