The Día de los Muertos, a colourful celebration emblematic of Mexico, pays tribute to the dead on 1 and 2 November. Recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, this event blends pre-Hispanic traditions with Catholic influences.

Throughout the country, altars adorned with flowers and offerings honour the ancestors. In San Andrés Mixquic, the celebrations culminate in the Alumbrada, when the cemeteries are lit up with candles. Festivities also take place in major cities like Mexico City or Merida, with large parades and various cultural events surrounding the festival. Each region, such as Yucatán with its Hanal Pixán, offers a unique variation on this lively festival.

Brazil – Formula 1 Grand Prix in São Paulo

The São Paulo Grand Prix, to be held on 3 November 2024, is one of the highlights of the Formula 1 season. Held on the legendary Interlagos circuit, or Autodromo José Carlos Pace, the race is contested over 71 laps, covering a total of 4.309 kilometres per lap. The demanding layout, combined with the passionate energy of the Brazilian fans, makes it a must-see event on the F1 calendar. Known for its unpredictable twists and turns, the São Paulo race is often decisive in the fight for the world title.

Peru – Anniversary of Puno

Puno’s 356th anniversary is a vibrant event celebrating the city’s foundation on 4 November 1688. Puno, known as the mythical cradle of the Inca Empire, commemorates this history through a series of cultural activities. The central day includes folk parades featuring the pandilla puneña, a colourful and joyful traditional dance. The festivities culminate on 5 November with the legendary re-enactment of the appearance of Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, children of the Sun, emerging from the waters of Lake Titicaca. At the same time, events such as a gastronomic festival and the Festicultura Rock add a modern touch to these historic celebrations.

Colombia – Cartagena de Indias Independence Day

Each year, Cartagena celebrates its independence for several days with colourful festivities commemorating its history and culture. The parade of floats, the centrepiece of the celebrations, is a veritable artistic extravaganza highlighting important aspects of the city. Music and dance fill the squares and streets, with concerts by local and international artists, as well as a variety of cultural events such as art exhibitions, children’s activities and the Miss Colombia elections. These festivities not only commemorate the city’s liberation in 1811, but also reinforce Cartagena’s collective identity and living heritage.

Argentina – Copa Libertadores final (Buenos Aires)

The Copa Libertadores, organised by CONMEBOL, is South America’s most prestigious club tournament. It brings together teams from ten countries, including Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. The passion of the fans builds to a crescendo with each round, with the finals being particularly intense.

The final, to be played on 30 November 2024 in Buenos Aires, will crown the champion, who will go on to take part in international competitions such as the Club World Cup. This unique match will be the climax of a long and hotly contested campaign, offering an unmissable spectacle for football fans across the continent.
