Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, has just received an award for its commitment to making tourism accessible to all. Winner of the prestigious FITUR4all award, which recognizes the best initiatives in the field of inclusion, the city is now an international benchmark. The award highlights years of efforts to enable people with disabilities or reduced mobility to fully enjoy the cultural and natural riches of Uruguay’s capital.
A city that places accessibility at the heart of its tourism development
Far from being a one-off initiative, Montevideo has made accessibility a central pillar of its tourism development. Thanks to close collaboration between the municipality and several local associations, major improvements have been made to urban infrastructures and services for travellers with disabilities.
One of the flagship projects is the creation of an accessible tourist circuit comprising adapted routes through emblematic sites such as the Old Town, the Port Market and Rodó Park. These sites have been equipped with access ramps, Braille signage, adapted sanitary facilities and other features to facilitate the visitor experience.
Montevideo didn’t stop at physical adaptations alone: training was also provided for tourism professionals, to ensure an inclusive welcome adapted to everyone’s needs.
Combining inclusion and sustainable development
Far from being an isolated challenge, accessibility is seen as a complement to a broader policy of sustainable tourism. Montevideo is committed to reducing its carbon footprint, promoting environmentally-friendly means of transport and encouraging responsible practices among visitors and businesses in the sector.
The publication of a guide to accessible tourism, aimed at both travelers and professionals, reflects this global approach. This document lists adapted infrastructures and offers practical advice to help organize your stay.

Our article: Montevideo, A Cultural Journey to the Heart of Uruguay
Montevideo proves that accessibility isn’t just about building ramps: it’s about a change of outlook, political will and collective involvement. Other cities could draw inspiration from this commitment to offer all travellers, without distinction, the opportunity to discover the world in the best possible conditions.
By establishing itself as an open and inclusive destination, Montevideo is not just attracting more visitors: it’s helping to move tourism towards a fairer, more humane and more universal model.
