The aroma of cocoa is invading Guayaquil, as the city inaugurated the Museo del Cacao (Cocoa Museum) on the 28th of July. It is a new tourist attraction that seeks to make known and preserve the history, culture and tradition of the “golden bean”.

Located in the centre of the city, at the intersection of Imbabura and Panama Streets, this space highlights the cocoa activity that used to prevail in the region. It has fifteen rooms where you can enjoy samples of ancestral cultures, re-enactments of buccaneers and pirates, archaeological remains and various contents that are displayed in this heritage house.

Visitors can discover the process, from planting, cultivation, harvesting and even the preparation of the chocolate bar. This museum aims to promote the identity of the city and to reaffirm that the origin of cocoa has been Ecuadorian for over four thousand years.

The Museo del Cacao is housed in the Casa Guzmán Aspiazu, a building constructed between 1927 and 1929 and considered one of the most luxurious of its time. Today, its architectural design, balconies and details, such as the colourful floral arrangements in relief on the façade, welcome and captivate residents and travellers alike.

Exploring this space, which has become a tourist attraction, will take you on a journey full of unique aromas and flavours, linked to the best cocoa in the world, giving you the opportunity to appreciate the agrotourism potential of the city, the province and Ecuador.
