The Tatacoa Desert: an arid oasis in Colombia

The Tatacoa Desert, located in the Huila department of Colombia, just over 300 km from Bogotá, is much more than an arid expanse – it’s a fascinating landscape of rock formations, towering cacti and red and grey earth. It’s a must-see destination for those in search of natural beauty, adventure and scientific discovery.

A unique and mysterious landscape

Contrary to its name, Tatacoa is a tropical dry forest, not a desert. Its spectacular geological formations, shaped by millennia of erosion, create a panorama worthy of the best science fiction settings. This “desert” is divided into two main areas: Cusco, characterised by its red earth, and Los Hoyos, where grey hues predominate. These contrasting colours make for an impressive visual spectacle, particularly at sunrise and sunset.

Activities and Adventures

Hiking and Trekking

The Tatacoa Desert offers a number of hiking trails for all levels. The routes allow you to discover the diverse landscapes and unique flora of the region. The giant cacti, some reaching over 10 metres in height, are an impressive sight.

Discovering Cusco

Cusco is famous for its red rock formations. Walking along its winding paths, visitors can discover landscapes sculpted by erosion that seem to have emerged from another world. Cusco is a perfect location for photography enthusiasts, offering incredible opportunities to capture the raw beauty of the desert.

Los Hoyos, with its grey hues and earth formations, stands in stark contrast to Cusco. Here, visitors can explore labyrinths of canyons and valleys. The Valle de los Xilópalos area is ideal for hiking and observing endemic flora and fauna. A dip in the natural underground pools is a refreshing experience after a day’s hiking under the scorching sun.

Archaeology and palaeontology

Tatacoa is also a site of great palaeontological importance. Numerous fossils of prehistoric mammals and reptiles have been discovered in this area, attracting scientists from all over the world. The Villavieja Palaeontological Museum offers guided tours to learn more about the geological history and discoveries made in the area.

A Festival of Astronomical Tourism is held every year in Villavieja, attracting amateur and professional astronomers, offering lectures, workshops and night-time observations.

Practical Tips for Visiting Tatacoa

  • Best time of year: You can visit the desert all year round. However, for astronomical observation, the best period is from June to August, when the skies are clearest.
