Traditional cuisine is a blend of cultures, with meals accompanied by the famous tortillas, a type of corn or wheat cake. The most common drinks are lager and fruit juice. Drink purified water.

The climate is tropical, but much of the country is mountainous, so temperatures in the highlands are generally pleasant during the day, but it can be cool, especially in the morning and evening, and even cold at times. The lower regions are hot and humid: the coast and the Petén region.

Choose official taxis and agree on the fare before getting in, as few vehicles have meters. Apps like Uber are also available in some cities.

Health

Tap water is not safe to drink. Use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth. Bring mosquito repellent and consult a doctor for recommended vaccinations. Travel insurance is essential.

Security

Guatemala is generally safe in tourist areas, but stay vigilant with your belongings and avoid walking at night. Be cautious of pickpockets in markets and public transport.
