Practical info

Gastronomy

Traditional Mexican cuisine is classified as an Intangible Heritage Site by UNESCO, which shows the richness and variety of this cuisine resulting from the blending of cultures. There are several gastronomic regions such as Puebla, Oaxaca and the Yucatan Peninsula to name the best known. Traditional drinks to accompany meals are fruit waters and beers. The most emblematic drink in Mexico is tequila, an alcohol made from a variety of agave, the blue agave. There is also mezcal made from another variety of agave. There is also wine, including several great vintages. We must not forget chocolate, which originated in Mexico and was originally the drink of the gods, reserved for pre-Hispanic dignitaries!

Climate

Mexico is a tropical country, but it's cooler and even colder in the higher elevations, such as Mexico City, central Mexico, Chiapas and the Copper Canyon. Even in regions with a warm climate, it can sometimes feel cool, especially in the mornings and evenings. What's more, public places such as restaurants and hotels are often very air-conditioned!

Electricity

The electrical current is 110 volts with American-style outlets (flat prongs). Bring an adapter for your European devices.

Public holidays

Opening hours

Mexico mainly operates in the GMT-6, GMT-7, and GMT-8 time zones. Some regions observe daylight saving time, which may affect the time difference with Europe and the US.

Internet

Mexico has good Internet coverage, especially in major cities and tourist areas. Most hotels, cafes, and restaurants provide free Wi-Fi access.

Language

The official language of Mexico is Spanish. English is also widely spoken.

Money & Change

he official currency is the Mexican peso (MXN). US dollars are accepted in some tourist areas, but it is recommended to pay in pesos. ATMs are widely available.

Clothes

Sports clothing for visiting the sites with good shoes. Bring light clothing and warmer clothing to cover yourself in case of cold and/or coolness. Recommendations: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Important note: in protected areas it is forbidden to use sunscreen and mosquito repellent that are not biodegradable. This is the case, among others, of Sian Ka'an and Xcaret on the Caribbean coast.

Taxis

Choose official taxis or use apps like Uber. Avoid hailing taxis on the street, especially at night, and agree on a fare if the vehicle does not have a meter.
