“From the Great Wall to Machu Picchu”: A Documentary to Strengthen Tourism Links between China and Peru

To strengthen cultural exchanges and attract Chinese travellers to Peru, PROMPERÚ has collaborated on an ambitious audiovisual project: the documentary ‘From the Great Wall to Machu Picchu’. This initiative, produced in partnership with Chinese national television, is positioned as a powerful tool for promoting tourism, highlighting the historical and cultural wealth of both nations.

A Cultural Bridge Between Two Thousand-year-old Civilisations

This documentary draws a fascinating parallel between two emblematic UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Great Wall of China and Machu Picchu. Beyond these iconic monuments, the film explores the traditions, landscapes and histories of the Chinese and Peruvian peoples, illustrating unexpected similarities and enriching differences, but also a common present with a very large diaspora of Chinese origin in Peru.

For Ninoska Chandia, Executive President of Peru’s National Institute of Radio and Television (IRTP), the project represents much more than a tool for promoting tourism. “‘It is a cultural bridge that brings two nations together through a visual and narrative dialogue,” she said.

A Visionary Tourism Strategy

China, with its growing population of international tourists, represents a strategic market for Peru. Up to September this year, 26,375 Chinese tourists had visited the country, marking a significant 91% increase on the previous year, according to PROMPERÚ. These figures underline the growing interest in Peruvian destinations and the importance of targeted initiatives such as this documentary in building on this momentum.

A documentary with global ambitions

Broadcast in six languages – Chinese, English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian – and with a future launch in Quechua, ‘From the Great Wall to Machu Picchu’ aims to reach an international audience while promoting Peru’s linguistic heritage. By making these cultural stories accessible to a diverse audience, the project is boosting interest in Machu Picchu and other emblematic destinations in the country.

This documentary marks a key stage in the evolution of tourism promotion strategies in Peru. More than a documentary, it embodies an innovative vision in which storytelling becomes a powerful lever for connecting cultures and attracting travellers in search of authentic experiences. This project illustrates how bold collaborations can redefine the future of tourism on a global scale. With ‘From the Great Wall to Machu Picchu’, Peru is blazing an innovative trail in tourism promotion, demonstrating that a well-told story can become a bridge between continents and cultures.
