Chiriquí: A journey to the heart of Panamanian diversity
Nestled between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Panama’s Chiriquí province is a treasure trove of natural and cultural diversity. From the peaks of the Barú volcano to the pristine beaches of the Gulf of Chiriquí, this region offers a range of unforgettable experiences for travellers.
A diverse landscape
Chiriquí is a province distinguished by its diversity of landscapes. The Barú volcano, Panama’s highest point at 3,474 metres, dominates the region. Surrounding this sleeping giant is the Parque Nacional Volcán Barú, an area of protected nature where you can go for walks and enjoy the local flora and fauna. There are several hiking trails to choose from, including La Nevera and El Quetzal, ideal for observing several species of bird, including the famous quetzal and the toucan.
The Chiriquí region is also famous for its fertile coffee-growing soils. The village of Boquete, nestling at the foot of the Barú volcano, is renowned for producing some of the finest coffee in the world. Visitors can take part in coffee tours and discover how this much-loved beverage is produced.
A rich Amerindian culture
Chiriquí province is also home to the Ngobe Bugle indigenous nation, the largest in Panama. These indigenous people have excellent artistic and craft skills. The women make dresses and jewellery, which they sell in the villages and along the Interamericana road.
Activities to suit all tastes
Whether you’re a thrill-seeking adventurer or a nature lover, Chiriquí has something for everyone. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the many trails in the Parque Internacional La Amistad or try their hand at climbing Volcan Barú. Water sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the beaches and waters of the Gulf of Chiriquí for sport fishing or humpback whale watching.
Chiriquí, with its mosaic of landscapes, vibrant indigenous culture and varied activities, is one of Panama’s nuggets well worth exploring. Whether you’re an intrepid explorer, an epicurean in search of new flavours, a birdwatcher or a history buff, Chiriquí has a wealth of discoveries in store for you. So prepare to be amazed by the beauty of this region, where every trail, every mountain and every encounter brings you a little closer to the beating heart of Panama.
