Barichara: A beautiful escape in the heart of Colombia
Located in the department of Santander in Colombia, Barichara stands as a hymn to beauty and authenticity. Considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in the country, this destination captivates visitors with its colonial architecture, cobbled streets and peaceful, dreamlike atmosphere.
A journey through time
Barichara, whose name means “place of rest” in the Guane language, is a window onto the past. Every street corner tells a story, with its whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs and flower-filled balconies. The visit begins with the impressive Church of the Immaculate Conception, an 18th-century architectural masterpiece that stands watch over the village’s main square.
Not far away, the Santa Barbara Chapel stands proudly on a promontory, offering breathtaking views over the rooftops and surrounding mountains.
Don’t miss the stunningly beautiful cemetery, where funerary art blends with the tranquillity of the gardens to create a unique place of remembrance.
Lovers of nature and architecture will be enchanted by the Parque de Las Artes, a space where modern sculptures and lush nature coexist in harmony. The park is a tribute to the Barichara community’s commitment to preserving its heritage and environment.
A living cultural heritage
Barichara is also a centre for culture and crafts. Visitors can explore the workshops of local artisans, notably at the Casa de la Cultura, where art exhibitions and craft workshops follow one another, testifying to the cultural vitality. The village is also famous for its unique gastronomy, where “hormigas culonas” (giant ants) are a culinary speciality not to be missed.
The surrounding area
Barichara’s natural surroundings are awe-inspiring. The Chicamocha Canyon, one of the deepest in the world, offers breathtaking panoramas and activities for the adventurous: hiking, paragliding and rafting. Not far away, San Gil, renowned as Colombia’s adventure sports capital, promises thrills for adrenalin-seekers.
A few kilometres from Barichara, the village of Guane offers a peaceful getaway with its archaeological museum and picturesque hiking trails. The “Camino Real“, an ancient cobbled path linking Barichara to Guane, is a must for walkers, offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
Our article: Jardín, a concentrate of Colombia!
Barichara reveals itself not only as a jewel box of beauty and history, but also as a crossroads of memorable experiences that transcend the simple visit. In this village, the charm of colonial architecture blends harmoniously with breathtaking scenery and a palpable cultural vibrancy.
